Proposed Activities of the Thousand Stars Buddhism and Science Group (Mid 2005 to Mid 2008)

March - August 2005
Preparing for the national conference on "Dreams and Spirituality: Dialog between Science and Religion" at Chulalongkorn University on August 19 and 20, 2005.

September 2005
Second meeting of the Research Program on Science in Thai Culture and Society (first meeting took place in September, 2004). This is a program funded by the National Research Council of Thailand. A strong part of this is on Buddhism and science in Thai culture.

November 2005
Regular meeting of the Group - one or more experts in Buddhism, other religions and science will be invited to present a talk for about half an hour each, to be followed by an extended discussion session. The public who are not the regular members of the Group will also be invited. Topic will be decided and announced around three months before the event. The language will be mostly in Thai, but will switch to English if there are enough international attendees or if the speaker is from abroad. In the latter case, translation into Thai will be provided so as to stimulate interests among local audiences. The event will be publicized widely and media representatives will be invited as a stake holder in the program.

December 2005
Meditation training session on preparing oneself for Bardo (the intermediate stage between life and death), to be conducted by Ven. Sonam Topkyal Rinpoche, tentatively at Chulalongkorn University on December 24 and 25.

February 2006

May 2006
Regular meeting of the Group.

Regular meeting of the Group.

October 2006
The Group plans to hold a panel on Buddhist Bioethics in the upcoming Asian Bioethics Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Bangkok in October, 2006. The panel will consist of well known scholars in the field, and will act as a focal point for research and scholarship in the area. It is also envisioned that a book of collection of articles will be produced.

September 2006
Final meeting of the Research Program on Science in Thai Culture and Society. This is a program funded by the National Research Council of Thailand. A strong part of this is on Buddhism and science in Thai culture. A report of the research program will be produced in book form, which is planned to disseminate widely to the public.
